What does it mean that believers are delivered from the law according to Romans 7:6?

Believers are delivered from the law because the old condition in which they were held is dead, so they no longer serve in oldness of the letter. They serve in newness of Spirit. The new nature, led by the Holy Spirit, cannot keep the law by fleshly effort, yet when the Spirit guides, the law takes care of itself.

Les explains that Romans 7:6 means believers are delivered from the law exactly as it says: the condition in which they were held is dead, so they should serve in newness of Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. The contrast is between the new nature, prompted and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, and old Adam, who may recognize right and wrong and try to keep the law but knows he cannot and soon gives up. The new nature does not have that problem. Under the Holy Spirit's guidance, believers realize they cannot keep the law by the energy of the flesh, but when they let the Spirit lead, guide, and direct them, the law takes care of itself. Les says newness means a whole new ball game: when a person becomes a believer and receives the new nature, it is a whole new ball game.

Romans 7:6

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
