What does Romans 7:19 mean when Paul says he does not do the good he would, and does the evil he hates?
It describes the believer's internal conflict: the new nature, prompted by the Holy Spirit, hates evil and knows better, but old Adam still slips in and does wrong. Victory requires strengthening the spiritual part, keeping the old Adamic nature suppressed, and relying on the greater One within.
Les explains that in Romans 7 the things the new nature and the Holy Spirit show him to be wrong, he still does because old Adam is slipping in and getting the job done. The things the Spirit and the new nature hate, old Adam fulfills. To control the failures of the body, the spiritual part must be strengthened and become uppermost in all thoughts, acts, and deeds, constantly keeping the old Adamic nature in suppression. Les notes that it is usually old Adam, not the devil, who makes us do it, though Satan works through the old nature as his playground. But the One within is greater than the powers of Satan, and that gives comfort.
