Can an unbeliever communicate with God?

No, an unbeliever cannot communicate with God. Since Adam's sin, the human spirit or place of fellowship was made dormant, leaving only the flesh and sin nature. The sole exception is the prayer for salvation; that is the only prayer of an unbeliever God hears. Scripture declares the lost person is an enemy of God.

Les explains that ever since Adam sinned, the original sin nature entered humanity and the spirit—the place of fellowship with God—was put out of commission and made dormant. People now live in a body of flesh and blood operating through the five senses, with the old sin nature as their personality, and that is all they have. Therefore, as Les teaches, there is no means of communication between the lost person and God. Even the GI in a foxhole crying out 'Oh save me from all this!' was not heard by God unless he called out for salvation. That is the only prayer of an unbeliever God hears. Romans 8 makes it plain that the unbeliever is an enemy of God, and you do not deal with an enemy in normal relations. So the race lives in the flesh with a sin nature that is enmity against God and nothing to keep them in communication with Him.
