Les Feldick Bible Study

When do the 400 years begin?

The 400 years specifically begin when Isaac was five years old and Ishmael was sent out into the wilderness, completely separated from Isaac. From that point on, it becomes 400 years until Moses leads the children out in the Exodus.

Les explains that the 400 years is not a contradiction with the 430 years; it is just a matter of a benchmark of time. The 430 years runs from when Abram left Haran and came down into Canaan until Moses led the children out in the Exodus. The 400 years begins later, when Isaac was five years old and Ishmael was sent out into the wilderness, completely away from contact with Isaac. From that point, it becomes 400 years until Moses leads the children out.
