Why did Paul espouse the church to one husband?

Paul espoused the church to one husband so he could present it as a chaste, pure virgin to Christ. He acted with a godly jealousy over the believers, wanting them kept for that single union. This imagery reflects the ancient cultural practice where parents paired children for marriage.

Les explains that Paul is writing to Gentile believers, which includes Jews in the Age of Grace, and to members of the Body of Christ. Paul says he is jealous over them with a godly jealousy, for he has espoused them to one husband, that he may present them as a chaste, or pure, virgin to Christ. Les calls this a beautiful picture. It explains why the bride in Revelation is depicted as clothed in linen, bright and white and clean, because that is the whole concept of a virgin bride and purity. Les also notes this goes back to the habit of cultures in days gone by, where parents would literally pair the children.

2 Corinthians 11:2

For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
