What was the agreement made at the Jerusalem council between Paul and the leaders?
At the Jerusalem council, the agreement was that Paul and Barnabas would continue ministering to the Gentiles and not be forced to practice legalism or circumcision, while Peter, James, and John would deal with Israel. Additionally, Paul and Barnabas were asked to remember the poor, specifically the financially stranded Jews in Jerusalem.
Les explains that after the tremendous council at Jerusalem, the agreement was plain: Paul was to continue his ministry among the Gentiles, and the leaders would no longer force him to practice legalism and circumcision. Paul would preach his Gospel, while Peter, James, and John continued dealing with the Jew. Les points out that the only additional request from Peter, James, and John was that Paul and Barnabas remember the poor—the poor Jews who were now financially stranded in Jerusalem. This was about 52 A.D., twenty-some years after the crucifixion and Pentecost, and the main prerogative of Peter, James, and John was that Paul not forget these poor Jews in Jerusalem.
