When can Les say someone has come to know the Lord and been born again?
A person can be acknowledged as having come to know the Lord and been born again only after a genuine change in lifestyle is evident. The change includes new appetites, behavior, and attitude, showing old things have passed away and everything has become new and different.
Les teaches that the first thing he looks for is a change in lifestyle. He explains that every believer will have a change of appetites, a change of lifestyle, a change in behavior, and a change in attitude because they are a new person and different from what they were. This does not make them sinless or give them a halo, but they are the result of a creative work of a Creator God and have a whole new concept in life. Les illustrates this with a young man his same age who spent every Saturday night in the tavern and bar. When the man asked why he never saw Les in the bar on Saturday night, Les replied, for the same reason he did not see the man in church on Sunday morning. Les says their lifestyle and appetites are totally different, as different as daylight and dark. This is why he questions professing Christians who see nothing wrong with doing everything the world does. He insists there must be a change in attitude and behavior, and if there is no change, he doubts anything has happened. Les says he never says anything about having led someone to Christ or brought someone to a knowledge of salvation until he sees that change in lifestyle. When he sees that change and sees it is genuine, then he can shout to the heights of heaven that this person has come to know the Lord and has experienced what it is to be born again.
