What kind of crown did the Olympic athletes compete for?
In I Corinthians 9, Paul says athletes run to obtain a corruptible crown. It was merely a wreath of leaves and so forth that dried up and was good for nothing by the time they got home, unlike the incorruptible crown believers pursue.
Les explains that Paul is alluding to the Olympic athletes, who trained and trained with temperateness, not destroying their bodies by overtraining or coming to the race flabby and unprepared. They prepared for the Olympic races with common sense, being temperate in all things. Paul tells believers the same thing. Reading verse 25, they did it to obtain a corruptible crown, which was just a wreath of leaves and so forth. By the time they got home, it was all dried up and good for nothing, perhaps put between the bookshelves. They ran for a corruptible crown, but believers running for reward look for an incorruptible crown, one that will never end.
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
