Why was the outer covering of the tabernacle so plain looking?

The outer seal-skin covering was plain because it pictured Christ as He appears to the unsaved. Scripture says of Him, 'There is no beauty that we should behold Him.' To the unbeliever, He has nothing that appeals to them, so the outside showed no beauty.

Les explains that the outer seal-skin covering was very plain and had nothing beautiful about it. He connects this to what Scripture says about Jesus to the unsaved person: 'There is no beauty that we should behold Him.' To the unbeliever, Christ has nothing that appeals to them. The outer covering was the part visible if someone looked over the fence, while the inner curtains were made of fine linen with blue, purple, and scarlet and cherubim.
