What happens to businesses and entertainment in Israel when the Sabbath is established?
When the Sabbath is established in Israel, the nation will shut down all nightclubs, movies, and every place of entertainment and business. Sabbath observance will be instituted in temple worship, while secular Jews reject it and religious Jews have largely mandated returning to keep the Sabbath.
Les explains that before too long Israel will have the temple, and in temple worship they will institute the Sabbath day. When that happens, they are going to shut down all their nightclubs, all their movies, and all the places of entertainment and business. This fits the setting where the secular Jews want nothing of it, while the religious Jews have almost mandated that they must go back and keep the Sabbath. Present-day Judaism, Les notes, even limits how far someone may walk on the Sabbath to about a mile or a mile and a half, though he does not think the original Mosaic law was limiting walking distance as it does now. Jesus makes reference to this because, since they will have to go many miles, they should pray that their flight does not take place on a Sabbath day, just like leaving Israel the night of the Passover.
