What can we never be sure about in water baptism?

In water baptism, no one can be certain of a person's salvation. A group of men, pastors, or ecclesiastics cannot truly determine it, because they cannot look on the heart. Human testimony and outward veneer may allow conclusions, but only God Himself knows whether someone is a child of God.

Les explains that in water baptism we can never be sure as to a person's salvation. Even when candidates are examined thoroughly, no group of men, pastors, or ecclesiastics of any kind can truly determine a person's salvation. We may hear a testimony and come to human conclusions, but we can never look on the heart; that is something only God Himself can do. Les says we can look at somebody's outward veneer and reach a conclusion, but that is not the heart, so we must be careful. This is why Scripture says, "judge not." You and I cannot judge whether a person is a child of God. Only God knows.
