What was the purpose of each plague in Egypt?

Each plague was directed against one of the gods of Egypt, executing judgment on all their gods. Through these acts, God demonstrated that Egypt's pagan worship was powerless before Him and that He could destroy them at will, proving their many gods had nothing to do with the one true God.

Les teaches that every one of the plagues was directed against one of the gods of Egypt. As God declared, He would execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt. This proved that Egypt's pagan worship had nothing to do with Him and that He could destroy them at will. Les also reminds us that since the Tower of Babel, the whole human race until Abraham was saturated in paganism and polytheism—the worship of many gods. Israel, as God's separated covenant people, was the only nation on earth with a knowledge of the one true God.

Exodus 12:12

For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
