Why did Paul suffer these things?

Paul suffered because he was appointed a preacher, apostle, and teacher of the Gentiles, and Satan opposed the gospel going to the Gentile world. His chief opposition came from Jews, both believing and those still in Judaism, as well as satanic power from every direction. Yet he was not ashamed.

Les explains that Paul's suffering came because of his appointment to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. His chief opposition was the Jew—both believing Jews and those still steeped in Judaism—but it was also a satanic power from every direction. Satan did not want the gospel going to the Gentile world. He had tolerated it going to Israel in the Old Testament, but taking it to the masses of Gentiles was the last thing Satan wanted. So Paul says, 'I've suffered for these things, nevertheless... I am not ashamed. For I know whom I have believed.' In spite of all his difficulties, sickness, sorrow, and suffering, he never once doubted the God whom he served.

2 Timothy 1:12

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
