Who were Jesus' words spoken to, and were they spoken to us?
Jesus' words were spoken to the nation of Israel under the Law. While applications may be drawn from them, the context says they were not spoken to us. The apostle Paul's writings, by contrast, are Holy Spirit inspired and directed directly to us as Gentiles in this age of grace.
Les explains that Paul constantly had to defend his apostleship because false teachers were coming in. At Corinth, a strong element opposing Paul and his teachings according to the mystery claimed to follow Peter, and right next to that were those who claimed to follow the teachings of Jesus. Les notes this is no different today, when people say they will not go according to Paul but will go by what Jesus said. He says they may mean well, but Jesus' words were to the nation of Israel under the Law. Although applications can be made, those words were not spoken to us. Paul's writings, however, are Holy Spirit inspired and directed directly to us as Gentiles in this age of grace.
