Les Feldick Bible Study

Why is blood important according to the Bible?

Blood is important because Scripture identifies it as the life of the creature. When God permitted Noah to eat meat after the flood, He prohibited eating blood, saying flesh with its lifeblood must not be eaten. The life is in the blood, the actual source of life that keeps animals, birds, and humans functioning.

Les explains that after Noah came off the ark following the flood, God gave new instructions. Mankind would now be permitted to kill living things and eat meat, but God attached stipulations. In Genesis 9:3-4, God says every moving thing that lives shall be food, just as the green herb was given in Genesis 1, but flesh or meat with its lifeblood must not be eaten. Les emphasizes that the life is in the blood. For everything living under this economy—the animal kingdom, birds, or humans—the blood is the actual source of life that keeps the creature functioning. That is why blood is treated as significant and why eating blood was prohibited.

Genesis 9:4

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
