What is the Holy Spirit described as in Ephesians 1:14?

In Ephesians 1:14, the Holy Spirit is described as the earnest, or down payment, of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who guarantees the future redemption of the body.

Les explains that Ephesians 1:13-14 teaches that after hearing the word of truth, the gospel of salvation, and believing, believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. That Holy Spirit is the earnest, or down payment, of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Les points out that while we are already redeemed, the body is not yet redeemed; it remains in the flesh and is still prone to pain, accidents, and sin as the unbeliever. The down payment assures that even this physical body, from which soul and spirit separate at death, will be included in the final redemption.
