What does it mean that Christ is the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of all creation?

Christ is the visible, tangible expression of the invisible Godhead, and as firstborn He was first and existed before all creation. By Him all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, were created and for Him, and He sustains the universe by His power.

Les explains that Christ is the image of the invisible God because He is the express, visible, tangible image of the Godhead—the One representing the Godhead. The term firstborn means He is the first of everything that has ever been created; He was there first. Verse 16 says that by God the Son all things were created: everything in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, thrones, dominions, principalities, and so forth. All things were created by Him and for Him. Les also points to Hebrews 1:3, where God the Son is the brightness of the glory of the Godhead, the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power. Christ is Creator and sustainer of the universe. The vast universe with billions of celestial bodies does not crash or drop out of orbit because Christ has them all under control. That same control assures us God is aware of every individual, because He knows every single celestial body.
