Les Feldick Bible Study

Why should women ask their husbands at home instead of in church?

Women were to ask their husbands at home to preserve the mood of subservience, not slavery, but recognition that the husband is head of the house. Paul wrote in light of his culture, and the principle reaches back to Eden, where Eve ate the fruit first.

Les teaches that Christianity brought the greatest liberty for the feminine portion of the human race, lifting women from being downtrodden, uneducated, and unable to read, almost to an equal level with men. But present-day women abused that liberty, and abuse begins to backfire. Paul therefore wrote in the light of his culture and day, saying women should remain subdued, not talkative, and not take authority in the local church. Verse 35 says if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. The reason is to keep the mood of subservience—not slavery—recognizing that the husband was the head of the house. That goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden, prompted by Eve’s eating of the fruit first.

1 Corinthians 14:35

And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
