What happens in Middle Eastern culture when a woman is veiled?

In Middle Eastern culture, a veiled woman can move through almost any street or place without fear, because no one dares touch her. If she removes her veil, she loses that protection and may become the object of whatever others want to do to her.

Les explains that in the Middle East, if a lady is veiled, she can go almost anywhere in any street or place without fear. No one dares touch a veiled woman, even though we may not understand it, because that is their culture. But if she takes her veil off, she becomes the object of almost anything they want to do to her. Paul uses this as an example: the prostitutes were brazen in their dress, behavior, and talkativeness. In light of that, the women of the Church should not be like women of the street, but should be subdued and subservient to their husbands. They were to keep silence, as the complete opposite of those out on the street. Les also notes that under the Law, even God's Law to Israel, the woman had almost no rights, but God had His reason for doing it.
