How many temple priestesses came into Corinth's streets each night?
Each night, a thousand priestesses from the temple on the bluff came down into Corinth's streets and practiced prostitution. This gross immorality characterized Corinth and required the church to deal with it daily, so Paul instructed believers to avoid any behavior resembling those brazen, talkative prostitutes.
Les explains that Corinth was a wicked, wicked city marked by gross immorality. He points to the temple up on the bluff, from which a thousand priestesses came down every night into the streets of Corinth practicing prostitution. This was something the little church had to deal with every day of its existence. So Paul laid upon the congregation of believers not to do anything that smacked of being like one of those prostitutes. He told the ladies to watch their languages, speaking, and behavior, because if they did anything that smacked of those brazen, talkative prostitutes, the world would get the wrong impression.
