What was Salem?
Salem was a small village that later became Jerusalem. It was the place where Melchizedek served as High Priest and King, and it existed before the Jewish nation was formed. The context identifies Salem directly with the future site of Jerusalem.
Les explains that Salem was the little village which later became Jerusalem. In the context, Melchizedek is introduced as the High Priest of Salem and also the King of Salem. This was before the Jewish nation had been formed. Melchizedek brought forth bread and wine, which was not what was normally used in the sacrifices of Abraham's day. Les teaches that this was a subtle prophecy pointing to the resurrection and the Lord's Supper, which Jesus administered in Matthew chapter 26 and which Paul discusses in I Corinthians chapter 11.
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
