Les Feldick Bible Study

What does 'be ye followers of me' mean?

It means to imitate Paul's example of proclaiming the Gospel to a hostile world despite fear, since he shared the same human weaknesses and failures. Believers are to follow his pattern of taking the message out so more people come to salvation, not merely admire him.

Les explains that the Holy Spirit prompted Paul to tell the believing world to follow him rather than Jesus because Paul was of the same human make-up as we are. He had the same failures, weaknesses, and fears. When Paul entered pagan cities, he trembled in his boots, not knowing what response he would get, but he went anyway. That is what believers must do, even though it is fearsome to take the Gospel to a belligerent world. So 'be ye followers of me' means imitating Paul's example and burning with the same desire to see more people come to a knowledge of salvation. Les also points to Philippians 3:17, where Paul says, 'brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them who walk, so as you have us for an example,' and to 1 Corinthians 11:1, 'be ye followers of me.' Paul writes to Gentiles.

Philippians 3:17

Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
