What did Paul find when he beheld the devotions of the Athenians?
While passing by and beholding the Athenians' devotions, their idolatrous worship, Paul found an altar with the inscription 'to the unknown God.' They had many gods and goddesses and still set up one more dedicated to an unknown God, showing they knew nothing of the true God of creation.
Les explains that Paul was ministering among people who had many gods and goddesses and all their worship. As Paul passed by and beheld their devotions—their idolatrous worship—he found an altar inscribed 'to the unknown God.' Les illustrates their approach with a story about a man who suggested praying to St. Jude and said, 'I'm a firm believer you plug every hole.' Just as that man wanted to cover every possibility, the Athenians, in case they were missing a god, set up a special altar dedicated to the unknown God. Yet they knew nothing of the God of creation.
