What is the cup and the bread which we break a fellowship of?
They are the fellowship of the blood of Christ and the fellowship of the body of Christ. The bread which we break is the fellowship of the body of Christ, for we being many are one bread, just as many individual kernels of wheat become one loaf.
Les explains that Christ is the head in heaven, and every born-again believer is a member of His body, and believers are members of each other. The bread speaks of much the same thing: bread comes from wheat, and a bin of grain is made of individual kernels. A loaf of bread is umpteen kernels of wheat ground into flour and made into bread. Likewise, believers as members of the body of Christ are just like that loaf—a composite of all those individual kernels. He concludes, “So we are the fellowship of the blood of Christ, and the bread which we break, is it not the fellowship of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread.” Even though the loaf comes from several thousand kernels, in the final makeup it is one loaf.
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
