What did the Corinthians do when they wrote to Paul about their problems?
They wrote down a whole series of questions and problems on the page and sent them to Paul, asking, “What about this problem?” and “What about this?” I Corinthians is therefore a response to the matters concerning which they wrote to him.
Les explains that I Corinthians was written in response to chapter 7 verse 1 and concerned “the things whereof you wrote unto me.” The Corinthians had a whole ton of questions and probably wrote them down, asking Paul about one problem after another. This whole letter deals with problems Paul does not commend them for. He is too kind to condemn them outright, but neither does he commend or brag on them. Paul backs into the situation carefully so he does not flare up their anger and put them where he cannot deal with them, while not agreeing with their problems, because they were still carnal. Of all the churches Paul dealt with, none were as carnal and fleshly minded as Corinth.
