What recurring theme does all of Scripture teach about something owned and lost?

All of Scripture repeatedly teaches redemption: something once owned and then lost must be bought back. Israel, God's covenant people, was lost in Egypt and redeemed by the blood of the Passover lamb. Likewise, sinners who fall short of God's glory are justified freely by grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Les explains that all of Scripture keeps teaching the idea of something that was owned and then lost, or "hopped" as he puts it. He points to Israel as God's covenant people: because of the brothers' sin, Joseph ended up down in Egypt, and while Joseph was there and the other brethren were in rebellion, God lost His chosen people and lost control of them. To recover them, He had to buy them back, which is what the book of Exodus is all about—it is a book of redemption, and He bought them back through the blood of the Passover lamb. Les then applies the same pattern to us today in the Age of Grace. Romans 3:23 says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, so every human being in his natural state is separated from God. But we are not left hopeless. Verse 24 says we can be justified freely by His grace through the redemption, or the buying back, that is in Christ Jesus. Just as the Israelites in Egypt rested on the blood of the lamb on the door, this is what we have to rest on even as Gentiles in this Age of Grace.
