Why did God call out Abram after the Tower of Babel?
God called Abram because after the Tower of Babel the human race could no longer be dealt with on the basis He had been using. So God did something totally different: He called one man, Abram, promising that a nation would come from him and through that nation He would consummate redemption.
Les teaches that after the Tower of Babel, God realized the human race was in a state where He could not do anything with them on the basis He had been using. So He did something totally different: He called out one man, Abram, and dealt with him down at the city of Ur, in Babylon. He promised Abram—the Abrahamic covenant—that out of him would come a nation of people, and through that little nation God would consummate His whole plan of redemption. Abram appears around 2,000 B.C.; 500 years later Israel is a nation, coming out of Egypt under Moses and receiving the Law.
