What does Paul mean by 'it is good for a man not to touch a woman'?
Paul means a man should not become physically involved with a woman so as to excite the sexual senses. He is not forbidding marriage or normal contact, for believers must simply be careful in everyday dealings with the opposite sex, as chapter 6 warns. Even the early church practiced the holy kiss.
Les explains that Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles, is writing to a congregation in the wicked city of Corinth that had come out of an immoral, idolatrous background. They were hung up on the marriage relationship, now Biblical compared to paganism. In paganism, marriage did not amount to much; it was a place to propagate the family, but pagans knew nothing of moral integrity or fidelity in marriage. So they were going off the deep end, asking if it was right to marry. Paul says not to misinterpret him. When he says it is good for a man not to touch a woman, he is not saying they should not get involved and get married. In light of the verses in chapter 6, as believers, men and women must be careful in their contact with people of the opposite sex in everyday experiences. If Les understands the Greek, Paul is talking about a man not getting physically involved with a woman to excite the sexual senses. He is certainly not bringing into vogue the taking away of shaking hands with women, and even in the early church they granted the holy kiss, where they would embrace, much like Middle Easterners still do.
Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
