Why did Paul tell the Corinthians to have their own wife instead of being tempted?

Paul instructed each man to have his own wife and each woman her own husband to avoid fornication and the trap of immoral activity. Because Corinth had many prostitutes and constant temptation, marriage provided a redeeming effect, helping believers not go into the world and be promiscuous.

Les teaches from I Corinthians chapter 7 that Paul says it is good for a man not to get involved, referring to the sexual instincts and not touching a woman, but nevertheless to avoid fornication or falling into immoral activity. Paul writes, "Let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband." Les explains that this is not the sole reason for getting married, but it does have a redeeming effect: if a man has his wife and she has him, they are not tempted to go out into the world and be promiscuous with those they have no business being with. Les also notes that in Corinth a thousand prostitutes were plying the streets every night, making it a constant temptation for a young man, so Paul says rather than be tempted with that, have your own wife. Earlier context adds that marriage is honorable and the marriage bed undefiled, but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

1 Corinthians 7:2

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
