What choice did Paul give the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 4:21?

In 1 Corinthians 4:21, Paul asked the Corinthians to choose whether he should come to them with a rod, wrath, anger, and not spare, or come in love and in the spirit of meekness. He presented these two alternatives, letting them decide which approach they preferred.

Les explains that in 1 Corinthians 4:21, Paul directly addresses the Corinthians and asks, "What will ye?" He gives them a choice: Should he come with a rod, with wrath and anger, and not spare? Or should he come in love and in the spirit of meekness? Les notes that Paul would go in the spirit of love and meekness, because it was not Paul's nature to take harsh measures unless he absolutely had to. This letter, Les says, was preparatory to Paul's coming to the congregation at Corinth so that he could appeal to them in love and meekness.
