What is the main theme of the book of Philippians?

Philippians centers on the believer’s experience and rejoicing despite adversity. It is a precious little letter chock full of the believer’s experience, where in spite of hardship the writer can say, 'Rejoice, evermore I say, Rejoice.' That rejoicing is identified as the whole theme of the letter.

Les teaches that the whole theme of Philippians is rejoicing. He calls it a precious little letter, chock full of the believer’s experience, and notes that in spite of adversity the man could write, 'Rejoice, evermore I say, Rejoice.' He then points to Philippians chapter 3, where Paul tells the church at Philippi, 'Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk, so you have us for an example.' Most people think we are supposed to be following Jesus, but as we follow Paul, we are following Jesus Christ—not the Jesus of Nazareth on the dusty roads of Palestine, but the crucified, risen Lord of glory.

Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
