Who were the pagan heathens Paul was trying to reach with the gospel?

They were pagan heathens content to worship gods of wood and stone. Paul endured constant, extreme suffering to get the gospel out to them, yet he did not give up and go back home. He kept on until Rome itself put him to death.

Les explains that Paul faced the question of whether to keep going when constantly suffering every day of his life to get the gospel out to pagan heathens who were content to worship their gods of wood and stone. Les wonders why a man like Paul had to suffer to such an extreme so that we might get the gospel, and what kept him from giving up and going back home to Tarsus. But he didn't. He kept on and kept on until finally Rome itself put him to death. Les also asks whether we would keep going under such circumstances.
