What does 1 Corinthians 3:17 say will happen to someone who defiles the temple of God?

First Corinthians 3:17 says that if any man defiles the temple of God, God shall destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that temple is you. The verse refers to defiling the physical body; God destroys the body but does not touch the soul and spirit.

Les explains that verse 17 gives doctrinal side benefits, or not-so-benefits: if any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy, because the temple of God is holy, and that temple is you. He cautions that defiling the temple refers to defiling the physical body, and God will destroy it. The soul and spirit are hard to separate, but the body, the third part, is not that hard to separate from the soul and spirit. So when God speaks of destroying the body, the temple, He will not touch the soul and spirit. Les gives the example of 1 Corinthians 5, where Paul tells the church to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, not the soul and spirit, but the flesh.

1 Corinthians 3:17
