Why did God save Paul?

God saved Paul by His grace, not because Paul deserved or earned it, but according to God’s preordained plan. Paul was separated from his mother’s womb and called by grace so that God could reveal His Son in him. This was God’s sovereign purpose.

Les explains that Paul was steeped in the tradition of the fathers, but when it pleased God—who had separated him from his mother’s womb—He called Paul by His grace. Saul of Tarsus was already on God’s mind in eternity past; at the appropriate time, his conception and birth were part of God’s preordained plan. Though Paul had been a persecutor who hated Jesus of Nazareth with a passion, God saw fit to save him not because he deserved it or had earned it, but because of grace. God’s purpose was to reveal His Son in Paul, the resurrected, crucified, and risen Christ.
