What happened at the funeral where the eloquent preacher dropped the ball?

At a neighbor lady’s funeral, a renowned, eloquent preacher gave a tremendous sermon to a huge church crowd, many of whom had never heard the gospel. But just as he reached the threshold of the plan of salvation, he dropped the ball and failed to preach Christ crucified.

Les recalls attending the funeral of a neighbor lady specifically because he had heard that the church had a tremendous preacher and wanted to hear him. The man was indeed tremendous and delivered a great, eloquent sermon to a whole huge church full of people, many of whom Les was sure had never heard the gospel. It was a tremendous opportunity for hundreds to hear the simple message of salvation. Yet after that eloquent sermon, just as he came to the threshold of the plan of salvation, he dropped the ball—simply dropped it. Les came away crestfallen, wondering how a man so eloquent and known as a great preacher could bring such a crowd to the place where all he had to do was preach Christ crucified and then blow it. Les adds that this is happening all too often.
