What is the first question to ask when reading any part of the Bible?

The first question to ask when reading any part of Scripture is, “To whom was this addressed?” This question should always be asked first, before drawing conclusions from a passage. It directs the reader to identify the audience being addressed in the text.

Les teaches that this principle came from an older preacher who greatly influenced his learning, a man he described as a tremendous preacher with a tremendous knowledge of the Scriptures. Les says this man gave him what he has passed on over and over: whenever you read something in the Scriptures, always ask yourself first, “To whom was this addressed?” That question establishes the intended audience before the passage is applied.
