Les Feldick Bible Study

What happened at Mars Hill that shows God using a weak vessel to confound the philosophers?

Paul came to Mars Hill as a weak vessel in the philosophers' eyes, dismissed as a babbler, yet he shook them up. Though they were the wise and mighty, Paul is remembered to this day—a plaque marks Mars Hill—while those philosophers are not, showing God won.

Les teaches that God chose the foolish things of the world to confound the wise and the weak things to confound the mighty. At Mars Hill, Paul was just a weak vessel in the eyes of those philosophers; he was a babbler, yet Paul shook them up. Paul is remembered to this very day, and there is a plaque at Mars Hill. They do not refer to those philosophers, but to Paul, so God was the winner once again. Les also explains that God uses the base, despised, and ridiculed things of the world—things the world counts as nothing—to bring to nothing things that are, confounding the high and mighty. It seems contrary to logic, but that is His way.

1 Corinthians 1:27
