What does Paul say the carnal Corinthians are waiting for?
Paul says the carnal Corinthians are waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Despite their carnality, moral weaknesses, and hang-ups, they were in grace and did not lack any gift, and all God's gifts were available to them as they awaited Christ's return.
Les explains that these believers were carnal, the opposite of mature spiritual Christians. They had been recently converted out of paganism and still struggled with immoral practices inherited from their families and generations, making it hard to break from the past. Yet in spite of their hang-ups and problems, they were in grace. Verse 7 says they came behind in no gift: all the gifts God was ready to give were as available to these carnal Corinthians as to the more spiritual Philippians. Unlike Philippians, Corinthians and Galatians needed corrections and reproofs. Corinth remained beset with problems, but everything God was ready to pour out was available to them. So in spite of all their carnality and moral weaknesses, Paul says they were waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
