Who is the light of the world today since Israel rejected that role?

Israel was promised to be the light of the world under the Old Testament, but Israel rejected that opportunity. By application, believers today—you and I who believe—are now the light of the world, just as Jesus illustrated to the disciples.

Les explains that when Jesus spoke to the twelve on the northern shores of Galilee, He used a city on a hill as a perfect illustration and said, “You, just like that city on a hill, you are the light of the world.” Les notes that according to all the Old Testament promises, Israel—the Jew—was to be the light of the world. But Israel rejected that opportunity of becoming the light of the world. Therefore, by application, believers today—you and I as believers—are the light of the world, and the same application still stands.

Matthew 5:14

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Was Jesus talking to Israel or to believers when He said 'You are the light of the world'?

The 'light of the world' can be applied to believers today, but Jesus originally spoke those words to Israel, not to Christians.
