What was one of the biggest disputes between believers in Paul's day?

A major dispute among early believers concerned eating meat that had been offered to an idolatrous temple. Paul instructs the strong to receive the weak in faith, but not to engage in doubtful disputations or arguments over dietary practices, since some believed they could eat all things while the weak ate only herbs.

Les explains that in Romans 14 Paul addresses disputes between believers, and one of the biggest in Paul's day was eating meat that had been offered to an idolatrous temple. Les points out Paul is dealing with the weak in faith, perhaps a relatively new believer, and instructs believers to receive him into fellowship but not to doubtful disputation—don't get into a big argument because he sees you eating meat bought at the marketplace that probably came from the temple, and he won't touch it. One believes he may eat all things, while another who is weak eats only herbs, becoming a vegetarian. Les also notes that even old Elijah was fed by ravens with herbs, veggies, and meat.

Romans 14:2

For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
