Why do people rebel when someone exhorts them?
People often rebel against exhortation when it comes from the wrong person. Exhortation means pushing and encouraging someone, but not everyone can do it without making the person mad. When the messenger is unsuitable, the urging provokes resistance instead of a receptive response.
Les explains that exhortation is the gift of pushing and encouraging people. He notes that not everybody can exhort somebody without making them mad, and a lot of people will rebel at it if it comes from the wrong person. But if someone has the gift of exhortation, Les says, if you can push people, get after it. He illustrates this with a young lady named Marilyn, who encouraged a young man from a Saturday night class. Years later he was in the Lord's full-time work, and he credited Marilyn's encouragement for how it happened.
Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
