What happened when Israel's promised king came the first time?

When Israel's promised King came the first time, the nation rejected Him and crucified Him. He then returned to glory in resurrection power, but God did not forget Israel. Jesus told the Twelve He was going back to heaven and would come back, a promise the angel also announced.

Les explains that God had repeatedly promised Israel a king and a kingdom. When the promised King came the first time, Israel rejected it and crucified Him, and the Lord in resurrection power went back to glory. Yet God did not forget Israel. Les compares this to MacArthur leaving the Philippines and saying, “I will come back,” exactly what Jesus told the Twelve on the Mount of Olives: He was going back to heaven, but He said He is coming back. The angel announced it as well. So Israel now is approaching the day their Messiah is going to come back. In Hosea 6:1, after God had torn and smitten them in discipline, the promise is that He will heal and bind them up.
