Did Abraham believe God's promise that he would inherit the land?

No, Abraham did not simply rest on God's promise that he would inherit the land. When God made the promises, Abraham asked how he would know that he would inherit it. God's Word was not enough for him; he wanted proof. God then gave him the deed to the land in the succeeding verses.

Les explains that Abraham was a stranger in the land promised to him, surrounded by Canaanites, and he did not own a stick of ground or have the deed. So in verse 8 of chapter 15, after God made the promises, Abraham asked, 'Lord God, whereby shall I know that I'll inherit it?' Les notes that God's Word wasn't even enough for a man like Abraham; he wanted proof. God responded by giving it to him, deeding the land in the succeeding verses, from verse 10 down to verse 18—not merely the narrow land from the Mediterranean to Jordan, but the much greater territory God deeded to Abraham.
