What controversy did the Jerusalem council settle about Paul going to the Gentiles?

The Jerusalem council addressed the controversy over Paul's going to the Gentiles. Jewish believers in Jerusalem objected to that mission and regarded Paul as way out in left field, so the council was convened to settle whether Paul's outreach to Gentiles was the proper course.

Les explains that this was the great council in Acts that tried to settle the controversy as to Paul going to the Gentiles. The opposing view came from the Jewish believers in Jerusalem, who thought Paul was way out in left field. The unit places this within Paul's larger discussion of Israel's past in Romans 9, where he cites Hosea's prophecy that God would call them His people who were not His people. It also notes that today there is no difference, because Jews and Gentiles must approach God on the same basis, and that Israel's future promises await fulfillment after God finishes dealing with the Gentile church.
