Why can't an unbeliever comprehend the doctrine of election?
The doctrine of election is intended for believers, who accept by faith that God chose them in eternity past. An unbeliever cannot comprehend it because it is not for him to swallow; he must first understand that whosoever will may come and that Christ died for every man.
Les explains that the election and calling of believers since eternity past is a doctrine that really should be studied only by the believer. As a believer, God wants us to know that our exalted position did not come by accident; in eternity past God chose us. Les says this is something only the believer can take by faith—God said it, and we cannot argue with it. But the unbeliever cannot comprehend this, and Les does not expect him to, because it isn't for the unbeliever to try and swallow. The unbeliever instead has to understand whosoever will may come, that God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, and that Christ died for every man. Les also warns that people confuse the issue by saying if it is all up to election, why worry, but the Bible never teaches that.
