What did Jacob see in the birthright and blessing?
Jacob saw in the birthright and blessing something to be gained. He had a glimpse, a flicker of understanding, that obtaining them held value, unlike Esau, who was destitute of faith and saw nothing in God's promises. Jacob recognized that unless God blessed him, he was destitute.
Les explains that Esau, the older twin, was destitute of faith and saw absolutely nothing in the promises of God. Jacob, by contrast, got a little glimpse—just a flicker—that there was something to be gained by getting the birthright as well as the blessing. Later, when wrestling with God, Jacob understood he was dealing with the God of his father Isaac and grandfather Abraham, and that unless this God blessed him, he was destitute. So Jacob valued the birthright and blessing because he recognized their connection to God's promises.
