Was Ishmael the son God promised Abraham?
No. Ishmael was born through Hagar by human impatience and was after the flesh, not the son of promise. The promised son was Isaac, born in due time according to God's sure Word. God kept promising and waited until Abraham was 100.
Les explains that Abraham and Sarai had no son or children, became impatient, and Sarah suggested Abraham have a child by their slave girl Hagar. Abraham agreed, and Ishmael was born, but Ishmael was not the son of promise; he was after the flesh, while Isaac is the son of promise. Les points out how many years went by: God first promised Abram that a nation would come from his own body and with his own wife Sarai when he was only 50, then 25 years passed before he left Haran at 75, another 14 years before they decided to take matters into their own hands at 86, and God did not fulfill the promise of a son until Abraham was 100. The lesson is that Israel was after the energy of the flesh, and not every child of Abraham was the promised son.
