Does God want everyone to study the Bible, or only a special class?
God intends for every person, not a special educated class, to study the Scriptures. Scripture is written so anybody can understand it; believers are to become students who learn how to study the Book, not merely read it, and to show themselves approved unto God by rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
Les explains that the Word of God is not gobbledygook but is written by the hand of God so that anybody can understand it. He cites one of the Reformers who wanted the printed Scriptures in the hands of every plowboy in England, meaning even the least educated could comprehend them. Les says he is of the same impression: you do not need to be highly educated or have a great theological education to comprehend the Scriptures. He contrasts this with the Dark Ages, when the church pulled the Scriptures away from the common man and brought them into monasteries because it felt only monks and the educated could discern the Word of God. But that is not what God intends. Les teaches that God wants every one of us to become students and to study, not just read, and to learn how to study this Book. He connects this to Paul writing to Timothy that we are to study, to show ourselves approved unto God, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
