Les Feldick Bible Study

How many times is the word tribulation used in the New Testament and who is it usually connected to?

The word tribulation is used approximately 29 times in the New Testament. It is most often connected to the activity surrounding the believer, especially persecution of believers, though there may be one exception to that general pattern in the New Testament.

Les explains that the word tribulation is used something like 29 times in the New Testament. He says it is always associated with the activity surrounding the believer, though he won't say always because there may be one exception. To illustrate, he points to Revelation chapter 2, the letter to Smyrna, verse 9, where the text says, "I know thy works, and tribulation." Smyrna means myrrh, and myrrh does not exude its fragrance until it is crushed. The church at Smyrna pictured that the more persecution crushed those believers, the more they exuded their testimony. Satan therefore had to give up persecuting the early church because the more he persecuted, the more it thrived; instead he took the office attack and joined them, after which Christianity began to slide.
