Is salvation by the Gospel conditional, and can you believe in vain?

Salvation is by the Gospel, and it is conditional: one must understand and know what he believes, otherwise he may have believed in vain. The Gospel is that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures.

Les teaches that salvation is by the Gospel, and he reads 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 to show it is conditional: a person had better understand and know what he believes, unless he has believed in vain. The Gospel Paul delivered is what he also received by revelation from the ascended, glorified Lord, not from Jesus of Nazareth in His earthly ministry. It declares that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures. Les explains this was pre-planned before creation, because God would create man, man would sin, and man would need a Savior and Redeemer. God set everything in motion, brought about Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, and revealed these Secrets, or Mysteries, whose core is the Gospel that Christ died for our sins.

1 Corinthians 15:2

By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

What does 1 Corinthians 15:2 mean by 'lest you believe in vain'?

Les teaches that believers experience salvation through the gospel only when they keep in memory what Paul preached, and this means they must know what they believe and understand what the gospel is about, otherwise they believe in vain.
